and peace report. i'm amy goodman. the obama administration has agreed to show two congressional panels the stated legal rationale for assassinating u.s. citizens overseas. on thursday, the white house directed the justice department to release a controversial 2010 memo to the house and senate intelligence committees. the memo details the administration's legal justification for targeting the american-born cleric anwar al awlaki, who ultimately died in u.s. drone strike in yemen. the memo's release follows growing calls from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for access to the administration's guidelines for drone strikes and other attacks targeting u.s. citizens overseas. a bipartisan senate letter demanding the memos earlier this week had accused the white house of "practicing secret law." it also follows this week's leaking of a white memo that allows for the killing of americans through an expansive definition of what constitutes an imminent threat. at a news conference in washington, attorney general eric holder was asked what he is releasing the drone memos publicly after disclo
. this is "special report." ♪ ♪ >> bret: good evening. i'm bret baier. the obama administration buckled today in the battle with some religion non-profit organizations over the requirement they offer birth control coverage in their health insurance packages. while today's shift is significant, it also leaves out a big group that is also suing the government. chief washington correspondent james rosen tells us what triggered the change. >> under the new rules proposed by health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius non-profit religious employers will be able to opt out of the obamacare mandate of female contraceptive in the healthcare plan. instead insurers will be required to provide coverage, including standard birth control and items like the morning after pill. the white house says the modifications meet president obama's overarching goals. >> we had to ensure the women have access to preventative services like contraception. the policy also respects religious beliefs. >> catholic league bill donahue held the announcement as a sign of good will toward the catholic community. becau
, austerity has been hurting obama's economy, for the last four years. government spending has gone down in ten of the last 12 quarters. under ronald reagan and george w. bush you will find this part of economic growth and spending is pretty much all growing under the two republicans. you can see it under the graph. under reagan, it added in his first term a bit more than 6/10th of a percentage point, under bush, about half a point. under obama, it has been negative. if obama is a socialist he is terrible at it. here is the interesting thing, if the economy is shrinking because the economy is shrink, we now added new jobs, almost 200,000 jobs in december. and we added more than 150,000 jobs in january. what is amazing about this, this period was fiscal cliff element, it was what everybody was saying the economy really needed was deficit reduction. and this is a period in which we didn't come to a big deficit reduction deal. what we did is raise taxes. it cut the deficit a bit, but not a big deal. what happened to the markets? somehow we kept adding jobs and the stock market did really we

were advanced and beyond what the democrats were able to do. the democrats under obama have caught up and far surpassed when republicans are able to do in terms of both gathering data, but then analyzing it and putting it to use, either to turn voters out, to discourage voters for the opposition from showing up, and in addition to that using social media as a way to harness support among the electorate in general. i think there are many areas here where republicans know they have to improve, but they've got to figure out how to do it, and what the chairman is doing both in visiting facebook, talking to technology experts in the bay area of northern california, and he'll be in washington state in seattle to talk about early voting in general. there, jon as you remember democrats are just a lot better right now at turning out voters for early voting. why that's so important, sometimes it's hard to convince somebody to show up on one day out of 365. but if you've got four weeks to work them over you can get them out to vote and end up with more voters. jon: success r- mark zuckerberg is
this morning. obama care contraception change, combination and really helping people out or is this a big gimmick? who is going to end up footing the bill for the third party insurer who has to pay for these contraceptives. essentially what's happening is nonprofit religious groups are not having to provide this contraception whether it be birth control or the morning after pill. to their employees, they still do have to alert the third party insurer. >> that sounded on first blush like a great accommodation because a lot of people were upset about that. if you read further you will have to provide a third party insurer. it seems kind of gimmicky, don't you think? >> the whole idea was and the critics, of course, have come out and religious institutions and george town university. other religious institutions said look, we don't want to be a part of this conversation. we should not be forced to provide free contraceptions to the people who are on our staff. we need to have that separation here. but, because they have come out and said now we need to be able to talk to these third party in
part of this morning reading them. yet the obama administration within months of taking office released several olc memos describing the legal justification for the treatment of terrorist detainees in u.s. custody. do you think it was appropriate that a different standard was applied to the release of the memos from the bush administration than those produced by the obama administration? >> i do not think there was a different standard. >> one was released within four months of the obama administration taking office. the other had been requested for a very long -- a much longer time. >> i am not a lawyer. i have come to learn of the term dui generis. the olc memos released after the president came into office were released because the program was terminated. olc wiolll counsel opinions, and those opinions were looked at in a different way because of the sui generis circumstances. >> both are essential for the ability of congress to carry its oversight responsibilities. finally, the intelligence reform act and terrorist prevention act of 2004, with which you are very familiar and which i

of young democrats. to hear this man talk was really astounding. i am quite critical of the obama administration in terms of things i have done. in terms of hagel's nomination, i am very impressed. his views on foreign-policy almost seemed to dip -- too far beyond this era. my only feel is that the political parties will bring this ideology down simply because a lot of people are not prepared for it. thank you and have a good day. guest: i think -- i would beg to differ about the too far beyond this era. i had the privilege of working for former secretary of state george schultz. in my estimation, senator hagel's views are consistent with secretary schultz, whom i think is one of the giants of our time. i think they have the same sort of outlook of trying to be pragmatic and take a look at things from multiple dimensions and informed judgments based on the conditions of the time. i think we have had many people of this particular persuasion. we have been fortunate in our country to have many leaders like senator hagel. i share your hope that we continue to have them going forward.

'm tempted to describe president obama's spending and tax ideas as small ball, but they're worse than that. they represent a conscious decision to neglect some of the most pressing issues that confront our country. you might even say it's a dereliction of duty in the battle to save america. last week, the congressional budget office projected that our gross national debt will increase from $16 trillion in 2012 to $26 trillion in 2023. now, that may seem like a long way off, but just since president obama has been president, the national debt's gone up by 55%, just in the last four years. but if you project that forward to 2023 when some of these young men and women who are working here as pages will be looking at entering the work force and looking at their futures, all they will see ahead of them is debt and a reduced standard of living. this is what lies ahead for all of us unless we embrace real spending cuts and unless we deal with the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security. now, president obama has a secret strategy for getting our debt under control, we'd all love to he
